Shiwinni ceramic decanter, in a leadfree quality

The handmade ceramic wine decanter is lead and cadmium free and hence it is food safe.  It contains approximately 0,8 L. and is 41 cm in height. Circumference is 46 cm, and it weighs approx. 740gr. The bottom is signed by the artist.

This unusual and unique wine decanter is decorated with simple organic motifs of tulips in red and green colors on a white backdrop. Originally the Hittite jugs were rich illustrated with lots of different motifs in various sizes. At Malukka, however, we have found it exciting to experiment a little – mixing the traditional classic shape with a modern minimalistic style decoration. Thus, the Shiwinni wine decanter is hand painted according to our personal wishes and ideas – making this decanter a truly “one of a kind” piece of handicraft.

History

The special form of the Hittite jugs is connected to the religious beliefs of this ancient civilization. The circle shape thus represents the Sun God – Ra. But the shape also had a more practical purpose. The original jugs were very large and when serving wine to especially the royals, the servants would thread his or her arm through the center and rest the jug on their shoulder, thus avoiding contaminating the precious drops with their dirty hands. Wine and wine production was a major reason for the wealth and importance of the Hittite kingdom and hence, they were also the first known civilization to establish laws and regulations surrounding both the wine production and the trade.

Kütahya ceramics

The Shiwinni decanter is handmade in Kütahya, an area of Turkey well known for their techniques, traditions and designs in ceramic art and craftmanship. Where the renowned Iznik workshops were closely connected to the royal court, the artisans in Kütahya mainly produced elegant and sophisticated household ceramics to the higher middle class. Through the last centuries, Kütahya has developed into a major ceramic area, famous for their outstanding quality and breathtaking designs and handicraft.
