The story behind
The Aegean region of Turkey has long and renowned traditions in the field of textile and wool production. The area has been inhabited by many different civilizations throughout history and in the years around the Birth of Jesus, it developed into a central meeting point for trading between Europe and Asia. The fertile land – among the locals called “The Aegean gold,” contributed to create great wealth and the establishment of vast cosmopolitan cities, with organized banking systems, schools, and theaters. Especially famous was the area around Pamukkale, where the beautiful white calcite terraces and thermal water, also in ancient times, attracted both tourists and traders.
Laodikeia
One of the biggest and wealthiest cities in the region, at the time, was Laodikeia. Laodikeia had, at their primetime, well over 80000 inhabitants from near and far. The city even had its own currency. Laodikeia, originally called Diospolis – meaning “the city of Zeus”- got renamed by King Antiochus after his beloved wife – Laodike. In the centuries to come, Laodikeia developed into an important center for international trading and textile production, famous for their high-quality cotton and wool.
Organic cotton production
In time, powerful earthquakes destroyed the city of Laodikeia. Fortunately, the cotton and wool production continued to prosper and during the last 30 years with an increasing focus on organic production, ecology and sustainability. Several of the large manufacturers are now entirely organic, throughout the full supply chain, working within the principles and criteria from leading international standards and certifications.
