Exclusive Turkish towels in wonderful soft organic cotton and inspiring designs
Where does the towel originates from?
For most people today, the towel is an indispensable part of the daily life and not something considered especially luxurious or particular, in any way. We all have towels – maybe the quality, design or price differs, but almost everyone can afford to have at least one towel for their daily bath.
But it has not always been so. In fact, it is only since the 1900 century that towels were made available to the general public, mainly due to the industrialization.
The influence and techniques of the Ottomans
The type of towel most people uses today, stems originally from the city of Bursa, in Turkey, around the time of the 1700 century. Here they fabricated luxurious handwoven and lavish embroidered towels, on the demands of The Ottoman Sultans, for use at the Royal Court and for the women living in the Harem. At the time, most Turks used peshtemal towels, as their flatwoven texture made them both very absorbent and quick drying, thus well suited for visiting the public bathhouses – called Hamam. However, as the Ottoman empire grew larger and became wealthier, the wish to get something unique, classy and very exclusive, meant that new techniques, styles and designs were developed to accommodate the demands of the rich and the royals.
The Ottomans were already known to be great carpet weavers and knowledge and techniques from this area, were used to make towels with small loops, in order to increase the softness and comfort of the fabric. In that way, these towels became the forerunners of modern-day terry cloth towels.
The rich ornamented towels were used to show of your wealth and influence – and decorative patterns and lavish designs – sometimes even made with expensive gold and silver adornments – indicated your place in the hierarchy.
As the towels were handmade and embroidered, the prizes were not for everyone. But throughout the 19 century and as an outcome of the industrialization, the towels spread from Turkey to the rest of the world and nowadays you will be able to get towels in almost all kinds of designs, styles, textures, qualities and prizes.
